Welcome to the Homepage of the Personality Psychology Lab at RUB!

Personality psychology is a field of study that focuses on the fascinating and complex aspects of human personality. It explores the patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that define individuals and differentiate them from each other. Personality psychologists seek to understand why people behave the way they do, how they perceive and interpret the world around them, and how they interact with others.

Our group studies individual differences and personality processes that explain self-regulated behavior and personality change. We investigate questions such as: What are the basic processes that explain behavior change? Why are some people better than others at pursuing and attaining their goals? What do these people think, feel, and do differently that makes them successful? In particular, what role do self-regulation, self-control, and motivation play in explaining these individual differences? To unravel the answers to these research questions, we pursue a multimethod approach that integrates self-report (in particular experience sampling), behavioral observations, and coding of open-ended responses. We are also interested in contributing our perspective to the development of individualized therapy options.  In this context we want to work closely with other disciplines of psychology, for example clinical psychology, to promote mental health across the lifespan.
